Pembroke Dock Marine

Pembroke Dock Marine will deliver the facilities, services and spaces needed to establish a world-class centre for marine engineering. It will have cross-industry application, but its immediate focus is on the low carbon energy sector. It is a £60m Swansea Bay City Deal project.

The four elements are:

Marine Energy Engineering Centre of Excellence (MEECE)

Delivered by: ORE Catapult

Purpose: Research, development and demonstration support, driving innovation in the supply chain and reducing cost of energy.

Pembroke Port developments

Delivered by: Port of Milford Haven

Purpose: Creating spaces that help industry fabricate, launch and maintain devices.

Marine Energy Test Area (META)

Delivered by: Marine Energy Wales

Purpose: Facilitates component, sub-assembly and device testing through pre- consented test areas in order to reduce the time, cost and risks faced and accelerate growth in the sector.

Pembrokeshire Demonstration Zone (PDZ)

Delivered by: Celtic Sea Power

Purpose: Enabling offshore renewable infrastructure to catalyse the Celtic Sea floating offshore wind and marine energy opportunities.

Marine-i

Marine-i is an ambitious programme designed to enable innovation in the marine technology sector in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. The sector has been identified as an area of high growth potential for the region. Part funded by the European Regional Development Fund, the £6 million project brings together expertise and key infrastructure from our partners: University of Exeter (project lead), University of Plymouth, Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult, The Cornwall College Group, Cornwall Marine Network and Cornwall Development Company.

The project is forward-looking and aims to help businesses embrace the emerging opportunities that will define the global marine sector to 2030 and beyond.

The project focuses on four interconnected themes: marine energy, marine manufacturing, maritime operations and marine environmental technologies, where Marine-i are on hand to stimulate and support research, development and innovation (RD&I) to help businesses exploit new market opportunities. The first Marine-i programme ran from 2017-end of 2019 and the current programme runs from Spring 2020 – 2023.

Collaboration with Marine-i will help your business grow by supporting you with world class academic research, specialist expertise, outstanding test facilities, subsidised graduate placement and more. Marine-i will help you take your product idea to the next level by enabling comprehensive Research, Development and Innovation. We will help you take your idea to the stage where a product can be demonstrated and taken to market.

Cornwall FLOW Accelerator

The €6 million-part funded project Cornwall FLOW Accelerator will;

  • Deliver a novel industry zonal wind resource assessment tool, thereby accelerating the delivery of offshore floating wind energy in Cornish Offshore waters, significantly supporting increased production of renewable energy
  • Build supply chain capacity capable of delivering low carbon footprint operations within the offshore floating wind sector
  • Undertake research and development, innovation and supply chain work for low carbon technologies, linked to floating offshore wind
  • Deliver knowledge transfer between higher education / further education institutions and businesses, with the Universities of Exeter and Plymouth involved as project partners and significant engagement with a broad variety of businesses from the offshore floating wind sector and its supply chain
  • Undertake research, development and innovation with a particular focus on optimisation tools which will allow the virtual testing of multiple offshore operations which will reduce costs of low carbon energy production and deliver sustainable operational methodologies for offshore floating wind technologies.

MEW SC work package

Marine Energy Wales, sponsored by the Welsh Government, is also delivering a work package to initiate and support the establishment and sustainable growth of a supply chain for the marine renewable energy sector in Wales. Seeking to facilitate phased development of the Welsh supply chain, thereby first creating and then maintaining high value manufacturing jobs in Welsh communities. Under the condition of early support, it is then expected that these jobs could be sustained long into the future through meeting the demand of an international export market, bringing added value to the Welsh economy whilst helping to drive the global green transition.

The work underway is gaining an understanding of the future needs of the floating offshore wind sector through in-depth discussions with developers, and surveying Welsh manufacturing companies to quantifiably measure how well they can meet these requirements.
